George John "Sonny" Bartkus

George John "Sonny" Bartkus, 71 years old of Canonsburg, Cecil Twp., passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, July 8, 2017 after a brief battle with cancer.

He was born Friday, April 12, 1946 in Canonsburg, Son of the late Tony and Josephine McKennas Bartkus.

Mr. Bartkus grew up in Muse, living in Cecil Township all of his life. He graduated from Canon McMillan High Scholl in 1964, and proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Bartkus was a member of the VFW 191, Canonsburg, and the American Legion Post 175 in Washington.

He was a carpenter by trade, framing houses for Ryan Homes in the area for many years. With partner Rick Supan, he had a construction company doing remodeling and home repairs. He retired from the maintenance department of Canon McMillan School District. He was also a vendor at the Original Farmer's Night Market on Rt. 50, known affectionately as the "Cheese Man"

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Sandra Chambers Bartkus of Canonsburg, Cecil Twp., daughter, Stacy (John) Bayer of Muse, son, George J. Bartkus, Jr. of Cecil Twp. and daughter, Elizabeth (Cliff) Anderson of Muse, grandchildren, Shannon and Jennifer Bayer, and Carter and Tony Anderson, a sister, Joan Bartkus Bush (late Col. William J. Bush), Nieces, Alison (Peter) Delgado, and Katherine (Robert) Ruberton, great-niece, Gabrielle Delgado, and great-nephews, Alec Delgado, William and James Ruberton.

He was preceded in death by grandchildren Lee and Gracie Anderson.

Friends will be received 2-4 & 6-8 P.M., Tuesday, July 11 at the Coleman-Taylor Funeral Services, 3378 Millers Run Road (Rt.50) Cecil, where prayers of transfer will be said Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at 9:30 AM followed by a Christian Funeral Mass at Holy Rosary Church, at 10:00 AM with Father George DeVille officiating.

Interment will follow in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township with full military honor accorded by the Canonsburg VFW 191 Honor Guard.
